From Representation to Transformation: Embedding Inclusion in Education
From Representation to Transformation: Embedding Inclusion in Education
In the FED’s submission to the DfE’s Call for Evidence for the Curriculum and Assessment Review last November, which was based on hundreds of dialogues with thousands of stakeholders which we have facilitated over the past four years, one resounding theme was that cultural inclusion must take centre stage.
It is imperative that cultural inclusion is not an afterthought but an integral element of the education system, designed from the start. This involves embedding inclusive practices from the outset to ensure every learner thrives in a supportive and diverse environment. Specifically:
- A Reflective Curriculum: The curriculum must mirror the diversity of society, representing groups that have been historically racially minoritised, LGBTQ+ communities, and individuals with disabilities.
- Diverse Perspectives Across Subjects: Integrating global issues and cultural diversity is vital across all subjects, with areas like literature and history offering immediate opportunities for transformation.
- Community-Driven Learning: A well-rounded curriculum should leverage local assets, spotlight community opportunities, and inspire students to contribute meaningfully to their surroundings.
- Combatting Disengagement: Learners have voiced feeling underrepresented in curricula and assessments, leading to disengagement. Updating outdated and exclusionary content is crucial for re-engaging students and fostering a sense of belonging.
