It is widely accepted that a wide and persistent gap exists in both attainment and progress made by disadvantaged pupils compared with their peers. This is even more acute for those trapped in long-term and persistent disadvantage. The disruption to education due to the pandemic risks widening this gap even further with the most vulnerable affected the most. Now, more than ever, we need a long-term strategy to make real progress on narrowing these gaps.
